Umbria in Fall Tour Overview

Vineyards stretch for miles in hues of yellow, orange and red. This is Umbria during the harvest time and it’s full of mystery and allure. Sometimes described as “the new Tuscany”, Umbria is an ancient region found between Rome and Florence that has a rustic charm of its own. The people of Umbria are proud and passionate, and ensure their local traditions and rituals endure for centuries.

Umbria Fall Tour Itinerary

orvieto fall

Day One

Arrive in ORVIETO

Our adventure begins in Rome where you meet your tour host and group before hitting the road. Today’s adventure is charming Orvieto. This beautiful hilltop town is famous for its majestic cathedral and stunning hilltop views.

Settle into a delicious bowl of local stringozzi pasta and cured meats at a favorite local trattoria and get to know your group. Fuelled by our first taste of delicious Umbrian cuisine, our local guide takes us on a walking tour through town recounting stories of Orvieto’s Etruscan past with a stop at its magnificent cathedral of course.

We can’t wait to take you inside a local digestif workshop where they continue to make a limited batch of a drink dating back to the 1650s.

After taking in the sights, enjoy some free time to wander, snap some photos or do a little shopping, before we whisk you away to our charming countryside relais.

Our very special accommodation is nestled in the Umbrian hills, surrounded by silvery olive groves not far from Todi. Enjoy some time to freshen up before we relax over apericena together at the hotel with a refreshing spritz or one of Orvieto’s famed white wines.

  • ACTIVITIES: Orvieto walking tour
  • MEALS: Lunch with wine, Apericena (light dinner) with wine

Day Two

CERAMICS AND OLIVE OIL

As you sip your morning caffè (coffee), do you ever wonder who made the cup that you’re drinking from? This morning, we’ll find out as we head to the home of Umbrian ceramics – Deruta.

Here we visit an artisan’s workshop and discover the stories and techniques needed to make their beautiful ceramics. Laden with beautifully crafted souvenirs and gifts, we enjoy a drive through the countryside towards our special lunch stop at an organic family-run winery and olive oil grove.

We learn how extra virgin olive oil and their delicious wine is made using indigenous Umbrian olive and grape varieties before experiencing a tasting and delicious light lunch. Enjoy local goat cheeses, and pork and wild boar salumi from the winery’s favorite artisanal producer just over the hill.

This afternoon, you have some time to relax at our relais using the wellness facilities, reading a book, or unwinding breathing in that fresh countryside air.

In the evening we visit a beautiful hilltop town – Todi. Here you have some free time to wander the pretty streets, take some photos, or even do some shopping. There’s a wonderful shop that sells handmade linens in the main square. With tummies beginning to rumble, we meet up at a local restaurant for an Umbrian feast.

BEVAGNA, Cheese and wine

This morning starts with a discovery into Umbria’s artisan craft traditions in charming Bevagna. We meet our local guide who takes us on a fascinating tour through town where we have the opportunity to meet local artisans and watch them work their crafts from candles to paper making. This Medieval village is truly lovely and you also have a chance to wander and enjoy the scenery.

Then it’s time for mind blowing deliciousness as we taste perhaps the freshest cheese of our lives. We visit to a nearby family-run dairy farm in the hills of Montefalco that makes wonderful Pecorino cheeses

We learn about the production and how the taste of each cheese changes depending on the season over a degustation of soft, semi-soft and hard cheese. Relax over a light lunch with freshly house-made bread, local wine, cheeses and seasonal fruits.

Nearby Montefalco – home to some of Umbria’s best wines – is our next stop for the day. You have the chance to explore, shop for wine, or bunker down at one of the town’s many excellent enotecce for an aperitivo.

This evening, we visit a biodynamic local wine maker in the heart of Umbria’s wine producing region. Enjoy a taste of indigenous Umbrian wines including, of course, a Montefalco Sagrantino, all enjoyed against the backdrop of the stunning autumn hued hills and vineyards and paired with a delicious three course meal.

Day Four

a cooking class and perugia

We bid farewell to our countryside haven, bound for the capital Perugia. But not before an incredible cooking class at the gorgeous home of a local woman excited to share Umbria’s Cucina Rustica with us. We enjoy a glass of wine before donning an apron to learn how to make ravioli, stringozzi, or perhaps lasagne along with some other traditional dishes. We’ll relax afterwards enjoying our well deserved three course meal.

Afterwards, we head to Perugia, a gorgeous hilltop city known for wonderful chocolate. We check-in at our city centre hotel and have free time to unwind and relax.

In the afternoon we meet our local guide who helps us to uncover the city’s secrets. Listen to the stories, legends and tales of Perugia – including the real inspiration behind Game of Throne’s red wedding scene. Together we visit a local artisan weaver at her incredible laboratory and learn more about Umbria’s ancient textile traditions.

This evening we take a walk through the winding medieval streets and enjoy a light dinner (apericena) together, reflecting on our trip highlights thus far.

  • ACTIVITIES: Cooking class, Perugia guided tour including artisan visit
  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch with wine, Apericena (light dinner) with wine

Day Five

Local Olive Harvest & More

Today we journey to ancient Gubbio. Here we meet up with our guide to learn about the pre-Roman Umbri and Etruscan civilizations as we admire the town and its winding Medieval streets.

After a beautiful walk through town, we drive through the lush countryside towards the mountains. Prepare for a truly local experience, impossible to organize unless you know some friendly locals. Today, we participate in a real olive harvest and understand the steps involved. In Umbria, olive trees hold an incredibly special significance to the people – most Umbrians have their own olive trees that truly feel like an extension of their family.

Olives are not the only produce harvested in Fall. It’s truffle season in Umbria so we’ll join a truffle hunter and go in search of this precious bounty.

After a memorable local experience, we sit down to lunch overlooking the splendid Apennine mountains. Our host prepares a platter of local cheeses and cured meats to nibble on before we try his signature pasta dish.

Are you a chocolate lover? This afternoon we are in for a sweet treat. Perugia is a city famed for its chocolate and plays host to the annual Eurochocolate Festival. We visit an artisan chocolate maker and see how they make their delicious pralines, chocolates and other sweet treats by hand each day. Together, we roll up our sleeves to learn how to make these fantastic sweets and have the opportunity to craft our own creations and take some home.

Have some time to freshen up before we meet at a local restaurant in Perugia for a mouthwatering feast.

  • ACTIVITIES: Gubbio walking tour, Olive oil harvest, Truffle hunt, Chocolate experience
  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch with wine, Dinner with wine
  • ACCOMMODATION: Boutique 4 star hotel in Perugia

Day Six

MAGICAL ASSISI AND SPELLO

A trip to Umbria would not be complete without exploring UNESCO heritage listed Assisi. This is the birthplace of St Francis, the patron saint of Italy, and is famed for its Medieval architecture and resplendent Basilica. We meet our private guide for a walking tour through town including, of course, a visit to the St Francis Basilica comprised of two equally beautiful churches.

You’ll have some free time to wander Assisi, before we follow our grumbling tummies all the way to one of Italy’s prettiest villages right in the heart of Umbria – Spello. We enjoy lunch at one of Spello’s best restaurants and enjoy local memorable pasta dishes and meat courses paired with the region’s best wine.

A true jewel of the region, we have the opportunity to explore the town and pop into the charming boutiques in the afternoon. Don’t miss a caffe or spritz at our favorite bar in town with a beautiful view over the countryside and plenty of cheeky cats that play in the garden outside.

Later, you have free time to explore the shops, museums and pretty streets of Perugia one last time. Tonight, prepare for a buonissimo dinner as we reflect on the week that was.

  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch with wine, Dinner with wine

Day Seven

A TASTE OF SPOLETO

We bid farewell to Perugia this morning but not before one final adventure in incredible Umbria. Take in the views of rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves as we head towards charming Spoleto. Perched on the top of a foothill of the Apennines, it is one of the oldest Umbrian towns, settled in the 5th Century B.C.

We meet our local guide for a walking tour to take in this incredible history – there’s an ancient Roman aqueduct that brought fresh water to Spoleto for millenia, ancient Roman houses to explore, and a 1st century BC theatre.

It’s not all about Ancient Roman ruins either. We wander the cobbled streets and admire the town’s Renaissance buildings before exploring the striking cathedral built across multiple centuries. Marvel at the frescoes inside before we try our final taste of Umbria – a typical porchetta panino (roast pork sandwich).

With full bellies and hearts, we make our final journey back to Rome. We promise you’ll remember the warmth and hospitality of the Umbrians for many years to come.

  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch with wine

GENERAL TOUR FAQ

Discover Umbria

Hidden in plain sight to the north of Rome and south of Florence, Umbria is sometimes referred to as the “new Tuscany” but this region has plenty of charm in its own right and a proud and unique culture, largely untouched by waves of conquests and immigration that influenced other Italian regions.
